Ephesians 5:32-33

Ephesians 5:32–33 (ESV): "32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband."

Marriage is a picture of the covenant relationship we are in with God through Christ. Jesus loves His bride so much that gave Himself for her and He is her head, the one to whom we are to submit. So it is to be with husbands and wives. When we do this right it displays a picture of the New Covenant to those around us.

Wives submit to your husbands...what?!?! Husbands, love your wives unconditionally. Wash them in the Word and present them holy and unblemished...huh?!?! These are tall orders. They are impossible without the Holy Spirit at work in our hearts. Both parties are responsible for their part only. Wives are to respond to their husbands as they would Christ in the sense of his position as head of the household. I know it sounds old fashion but it's biblical. Husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved His church and gave Himself for us. It all boils down to love and respect. What a profound mystery we are displaying in our marriages.

If you are married, how are you doing relating to your part in this covenant relationship? Are you conditional in these commands or are you obedient regardless of your spouse's response? Stop blameshifting (if he/she would...) and start doing your part. You don't answer for your spouse's part. Ask the Lord to give you the ability to die to yourself. This is possible to do or God wouldn't have asked us to do it. Those who aren't married but desire to be should pay very close attention to the requirement here and make sure you are prepared to do what this says. Amen?

Father, thank You for marriage. Pour Your Spirit out on us so that we might do our part well and represent You as You deserve to be represented we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
