Ephesians 5:18-21

Ephesians 5:18–21 (ESV): "18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ."

As Christians, we are to be filled and influenced by the Holy Spirit so that we can minister to the world and one another properly. This is an absolute requirement for us to minister as we ought.

Many people have given themselves over to the influence of spirits (as in alcohol). Being drunk means losing the capacity to think and function properly. We are not to be drunk with spirits but we are to be filled continuously with the Holy Spirit. The idea here is to be being filled. It is a passive imperative meaning we should seek God desperately for the filling knowing that only He can give it to us. We can't afford to live one day without the influence of the Holy Spirit.

What influence have you given authority to direct your steps in this life? May it be the Holy Spirit alone. He gives us the power and wisdom to know how to walk. He reminds us of the Word and what we might say and do to minister to others. He guides us through the pitfalls of life by revealing the deceptions of the enemy. If you are lacking in these areas today just ask God for a fresh filling of the Spirit of God. He is a good Father and He will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask.

Father, thank You for the continuous fillings of the Spirit. Fill us afresh even now that the Spirit might be the only influence in our lives we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
