Ecclesiastes 9:9–10 (ESV): "9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going."
Living this life as if there is nothing afterward is a grave mistake. We are eternal beings and what we do in this life translates into eternity.
Solomon concluded that this life is it...thus we should live for this life. Our focus should be on our wife and children and whatever it is that we do because when we go to the grave that is it! Therefore, one should do all that he does with all his might. He is partially right in what he is saying. We should do all that we do with all our might as unto the Lord for He is taking notes on how we are living (1 Cor 10:31). However, we must not over-focus or under-focus on our relationships but keep them in perspective. God should be who we are living for.
It's easy to conclude that life is meaningless so we must live for the things we have in it such as family, friends, and work but that isn't the truth. Your life has far more value than you might realize. You are eternal! What you do in this life will translate into eternity. Will you live for the temporal or eternal? Keep things in perspective. Don't solely live for your family but do serve them. Don't solely live for your friendships or your occupation but work hard to make them the best you can. Do live for the Lord solely. Keep Him on the throne of your life and He will keep your priorities straight!
Father, we thank You for all the blessings we have in this life. You are good and You have made us with a specific plan in mind. May we find it and live it out with all that we have. You alone deserve the throne of our hearts. May we never give our worship to the creation rather than the Creator. You alone deserve our worship. May we do all that we do for Your glory we pray in Jesus name, amen.
