Ecclesiastes 7:16-18

Ecclesiastes 7:16–18 (ESV): "16 Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17 Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them."

Jesus said those who are lukewarm make Him want to vomit (Rev 3:15-16). If you find yourself in the realm of Solomons stupidity here you are lukewarm and an offense to Christ. Yikes!

Who says, "don't be too righteous cause no one will like you but don't be too wicked cause your gonna die and stand before the Lord one day?" That would be the words of a backslidden Solomon. He is essentially saying, be lukewarm so you are good with both the world and the Lord. However, that is not the way it works. The Apostle John said, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 Jn 2:15)." And again in 1 John 2:29 "If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him." Solomon is giving unwise advice here because he is operating in the flesh and not in the spirit of wisdom.

Don't try to be friends with the world. Don't try to be enemies of the world either, but never compromise your righteousness for the sake of being "one of the guys." We are called to be different than the world, "to be holy for God is holy." Don't taint your life enough so that the world will like you. Live righteously and if the world rejects you so be it. Lukewarm Christianity makes Jesus sick. He desires nothing more than you to be hot or cold but not lukewarm. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, Christian. Be hot and therapeutic to those around you or cold and refreshing but be not lukewarm, amen?

Father, thank You for making it clear to us the temperature You desire us to be. We are so tempted to want to be liked by everyone that we can turn our spiritual temperature to lukewarm which is disgusting to You. Help us to live righteously and love the lost sacrificially, but never water down who You call us to be for the sake of friendship with the world. May we care more about what You think than anyone we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
