Ecclesiastes 5:1

Ecclesiastes 5:1 (ESV): "Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil."

Many will come into the house of God and promise Him the world and then leave and forget what they have said. It's better to say nothing and change than say a lot and remain the same.

The wisdom of Solomon is unbelievable and yet even as wise as he is, he is still in a backslidden state when he pens this. He knows what has value and what doesn't and yet he is still struggling with doing the right thing. Perhaps he speaks of himself here coming into the Temple and feeling the awe and wonder of the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Perhaps the temptation of promising God the world and yet not following through is familiar to him. The willingness to sacrifice but not to obey.

When you come into God's house after living contrary to Him the entire week don't make foolish promises to God you know you have no intentions of keeping. God is into sincerity. He desires repentance, which is a confession of sin and a decision to "go and sin no more." That is all He wants from us, not empty promises. Beware of the things you commit to for God will hold you to them. As Solomon says, let your words be few. Show God your sincerity through your actions. That is truly wise. Amen?

Father, we thank You for speaking truth to us always. Thank You for not allowing us to go through the motions and operate in foolishness before you. Forgive us for being flippant with our words. Restore proper fear in our hearts and help us to be sincere in all that we say before You we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
