Deuteronomy 15:16–17 (ESV): "16 But if he says to you, 'I will not go out from you,' because he loves you and your household, since he is well-off with you, 17 then you shall take an awl, and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your slave forever. And to your female slave you shall do the same."
A bondservant was a slave who was set free but then freely chose to give up his freedom for love's sake to serve his master all the days of his life. We are bondservants of Christ ( 1 Cor 7:22). We freely give up our freedom to serve Him all the days of our lives.
One of the ways God would provide for his children in the Old Testament was through the selling of oneself to another for an agreed-upon price. A Hebrew man or woman could sell themselves to one of their countrymen for a period of six years. The seventh-year they should be set free for it was the Sabbath year, all debts were to be forgiven and any agreements that were between countrymen were released. However, if a person desired to continue to serve his master he could become a bondservant, a willing slave for the rest of his life. The master was to pierce the ear of the slave with an awl upon the doorpost and that would be the mark that they were a bondservant forever.
It's interesting that Jesus became a bondservant to God on our behalf. He was pierced and will bear the marks of His service to God forever. When we come to Christ we become bondservants to Christ. We are marked with the Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13-14) and will belong to Him forever. Our entire lives are given up to serve Him. It's easy to forget that we were bought and paid for and that we belong to another. May we be reminded today and serve our Master wholeheartedly all the days of our lives.
Father, we thank You for sending Your Son on our behalf. He became sin who knew no sin that we might become the righteousness of God. Continually remind us of our contract Lord. We freely gave up our lives as Jesus did for us to serve You all the days of our lives. We forget at times so please forgive us. We declare even now to serve You as bondservants, slaves of Christ, forever and ever in Jesus name we pray, amen.
