Deuteronomy 12:4-6

Deuteronomy 12:4–6 (ESV): "5 But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go, 6 and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock."

It’s true we worship God in Spirit and in truth but don't forget there is also a place designated for His people to gather. He prescribed that so we should probably not forsake it.

Moses reiterated to the Children of Israel the importance of forsaking the idols of the Promised Land and to only worship the Lord God. They were to tear down all altars and cut down the pillars and Asherim and burn them with fire for they are an abomination before the Lord. But they were to seek "the place" that the Lord prescribed for them to worship. It would first be the Tabernacle and then the Temple. He goes on to say in vs 13-14 "take care that you do not offer your burnt offerings at any place that you see, 14 but at the place that the Lord will choose in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I am commanding you."

The New Testament prescription by God hasn't changed, we are still to come to the place He designated for worship (Heb 10:25; Eph 2:21-22; Acts 2:42; 1 Cor 12-14; 1 Tim 4:13; 1 Cor 11:18).  The difference is we came as the dwelling place. Collectively we are His Tabernacle and Temple (1 Pt 2:5; 1 Cor 3:16). We are not complete individually because we are members of His body thus we need each other. God designed it that way. May we never decide how and when we are going to worship Him.  May we let Him instruct us on these matters in full surrender to His will.

Father, we thank You for allowing us the privilege to worship. You are the King of all creation and the Lord of our lives. We yield to You today. May we obey Your Word and never forsake Your body. Unify us through Your Spirit and help each of us to fulfill our part in the local church as Your priests and servants. We surrender to Your will even now in Jesus' name, amen.
