Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV): "6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving."
Walking in Christ is the second part of receiving Him. It's passive to receive, He is a gift given to us, but to walk in Him requires action fueled by faith. If we don't walk in Him we will never be like Him. Amen?
The Christians in Colossae were caught up in what has been called the "Colossian Heresy." Those who had received Christ by grace through faith were not walking in Him but rather in legalism. They had adopted a mixed bag of Jewish legalism, Oriental mysticism, and Greek asceticism. Paul instructs these believers to remember the teachings of grace so that they might walk by faith in them being rooted and built up in the Lord Jesus and abounding in thanksgiving. To walk any other way would be an unproductive venture that would produce an attitude of ingratitude.
Are walking in the way that you've been taught by the Word, the Spirit, and God's people? You can expect a rough ride if not! God has instructed us to walk in total dependence, to abide in Christ like we a desperate for Him. Any other kind of walk will yield a big fat nothing burger and will be more detrimental to you than you can imagine. We are called by grace through faith in Christ alone and we are to walk in Him the same way. Return to the teachings of grace if you have abandoned them and walk in the newness of life that Christ died to give you!
Father, we thank You for reminding us of the way we are to walk. May we never try and perfect in the flesh what has begun in the Spirit. Help us abide in Christ and walk in the grace we've been given we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
