Amos 8:11–12 (ESV): 11 "Behold, the days are coming," declares the Lord God, "when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. 12 They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it."
Familiarity and freedom often breed neglect. In present-day America, we can freely and openly possess and read our Bibles and yet many churches teach about the Word and not THE Word of God. We are A-literate, it's not that folks can't read the Word, it's that they choose not to! The day is quickly approaching when we will not be able to freely do this. Seek the Word now while you can!
Israel neglected the Word of God. They prided themselves in being the people of Jehovah God possessing the Word of God and yet they took it for granted and did not allow it to transform their lives thus the Lord declared He would bring a "truth famine" upon the land. In those days people would hunger for the truth but will not find it.
We are living in such a time as this! The truth is being discarded for man's doctrine and funny stories. It is a sign of the times... 2 Timothy 4:3–4 (ESV): "3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." These are the steps that lead to a truth famine. Christianity in America has taken on the traits of Israel in the days of Amos...one day we will seek truth and only those who have it hidden in their hearts will find it. Cherish the Word, keep it the bread you feast upon! Amen?
Father, thank You for Your Word! It is our only food source for growth. Forgive us for not giving ourselves over to it. May we keep Your Word the main meal at our tables daily we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
