Amos 4:4-5

Amos 4:4-5  "Come to Bethel, and transgress; to Gilgal, and multiply transgression; bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days; 5  offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened, and proclaim freewill offerings, publish them; for so you love to do, O people of Israel!" declares the Lord God."

Worship is never to be measured by how it makes us feel but by how well pleased God is with it. Sometimes we turn worship into a man focused event rather than a God focused lifestyle. God wants us to worship Him not ourselves.

The northern Kingdom (Israel), because of its estrangement to Judah and the holy city of Jerusalem, setup places of worship in Bethel and Gilgal. Their worship was well pleasing to themselves but not to God. Firstly, they were not worshipping God where they were supposed to. Jerusalem was where sacrifices were to be made because that is where the Ark of the Covenant was and where God met with man. If you want to truly worship God in that culture you were called to journey to Jerusalem and offer sacrifice to Him at least once a year. So many in our culture have forsake the assembling of His people and have decided to worship God in their own way. Don't misunderstand me, it's not about a specific place to worship but it is about obedience and we are told not to forsake the assembling of His people (Heb 10:25) because we need each other.

Secondly, the volume of our sacrifices and tithes isn't impressive to God but our sincerity in the offering is what pleases Him. Israel was so impressed with the multitude of their sacrifices and bountiful tithes that it became the focus of their worship. Beware that your sacrifices aren't being offered to God with strings (if I offer this then you must do this) or brought before Him for selfish purposes. When you bring Your sacrifice or offering to the Lord bring whatever you have with a joyful heart, not our of coercion but out of love.

Worship God because He is God and worship Him the way He prescribed for us to in His Word. Let us not become the center of our worship gathering but may God be the One we come to exalt and praise!

Father, we thank You for reminding us to be true worshippers that worship You in spirit and in truth. Forgive us for making worship man focused rather than God focused. May You stir our hearts to offer all that we do with sincerity and joyful ness and not because it makes us feel good we pray in Jesus name, amen.
