Acts 7:58-60

Acts 7:58–60 (ESV): "58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep."

Our actions "in the name of the Lord" are sometimes not by God's leading at all. We can easily become a vessel for Satan while thinking what we are doing is for Jesus. Be very aware of what you do and say in Jesus' name lest you are duped by the enemy.

Stephen gave a convicting message anointed and empowered by the Holy Spirit and it produced his death. The religious leaders presuming to be vessels for God became vessels of Satan and they killed Stephen. By the command of a young man named Saul Stephen would be stoned to death. Even while being killed Stephen walked in the Spirit crying out on behalf of his murderers just like Jesus did. The moral of the story is that you will know the spirit you are operating in by the works that you commit. Beware of doing things in the wrong spirit.

How many times have you said or done something in the name of Jesus only to find out it wasn't the Lord at all? This young man Saul not only killed Stephen but then went on in the spirit of the devil and killed numerous other Christians. He then had an encounter with Jesus and the right Spirit indwelt him. Can you imagine the weight he must have carried the rest of his life thinking he was doing the work of God? Sometimes our actions have consequences that will live with us for the rest of our lives. Be like Stephen and you will avoid experiencing this. Amen?

Father, we pray for Your Spirit to lead us. We pray that if there is anything we are doing in the name of Jesus that is contrary to You You make it plain. Give us discernment to know the difference we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
