Acts 5:29-30

Acts 5:29–30 (ESV): "29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree."

We are called to submit to the governing authorities for it is God who has placed them in positions of authority (Rom 13:1).  However that authority never supersedes Gods authority and what He has instructed us to do through His Word.

Peter and the Apostles were law abiding citizens who were simply trying to follow Jesus.  That sometimes gets you in trouble with the powers that be.  The Pharisees had already instructed Peter and the gang to cease preaching in the name of Jesus.  It was the gospel message of the crucified and risen Savior they had a problem with.  Peter respond in the correct manner to the authorities of his day by saying "we must obey God rather than man."

Recently Greg Laurie was required to remove advertising on a billboard in Southern California because it contained offensive matter.  Laurie was holding a Bible.  It's right to obey the laws of the land and the authorities of our day even if they seem unfair to us.  However, when we are commanded to cease the preaching of the message of the Gospel like Peter and the apostles were, may we have the boldness and discernment to obey God rather than man.  Stand for your faith Christian.  The day is coming when we too will be instructed to cease preaching in the name of Jesus.  God help us to stand firm.

Father,we praise You name for being a stand up God.  You stood for us when nobody else would.  May we stand for you in this dark hour Lord.  Time is short, use us to bring the Gospel to the lost.  Holy Spirit come and emboldened Your people to know when to obey man and when not to in Jesus amen we pray, amen!
