Acts 2:42–44 (ESV): "42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common."
Devotion is a requirement for success with anything. The priority of our lives ought to be to succeed in things that matter eternally!
The disciples in the early church were devoted, this word means "a steadfast and single-minded fidelity to a certain course of action." There were four specific things that they were devoted to and which made the church successful and vibrant. They are the pillars of the church even today. The Apostles doctrine which is the New Testament, fellowship which is the sharing of ones self, the breaking of bread or communion which is remembering the death of Jesus and finally in prayers, to petition the God of heaven. This gathering was no social club or routine check off the list for these believers. This was their lifeline so much so that they made these things the priority of their lives.
How do you view your walk with the Lord? Is it a priority for you? Are you devoted to things that are hindering or helping you become more like Jesus?Being devoted to the right things is crucial. Francis Chan said "our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don't matter." What matters? The Apostles Doctrine, Fellowship, Communion, and Prayer. Devote yourself to these and you will find true success in this life.
Father we thank You for the Apostles doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayers. You use these four pillars to make us more like Jesus. Help us to be devoted equally to all Lord. We want to succeed in things that matter so please give us the wisdom to walk consistently in these things. May it shape and change us and bring glory and honor to You we pray in Jesus name, amen!
