Acts 19:5-7

Acts 19:5–7 (ESV): "5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all."

Many in our world today have an incomplete understanding of the person and the work of Jesus. He alone saves us. Nothing, including repentance, can bring salvation into the heart of man. When we truly believe we are given the Holy Spirit as our guarantee and equipped by Him for service. This comes by grace through faith IN CHRIST ALONE!

When Paul came to Ephesus he found twelve men who were baptized with the baptism of John, which was a baptism of repentance looking unto the coming of the Messiah. Salvation was by faith in the coming Messiah and repentance was the evidence of that faith. Paul notified these men that Jesus had come and now they must put their faith in Him alone and His death and resurrection. He then baptized them in the name of Jesus and the Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There was a clear distinction between looking for the coming Messiah and believing He had come and provided a way to the Father.

What baptism were you baptized in? Was it a baptism of believing in the person and work of Jesus Christ or something else? The purpose of baptism is identification with what Jesus has done for us (Rom 6:3-4). This baptism doesn't save, only faith in Jesus does. It is simply an outward action that professes an inward faith in Jesus. When we truly believe in the person and work of Jesus we are then sealed with the Spirit and equipped for the work of ministry with His gifts. Beware of putting your faith in repentance or baptism, put your faith in Jesus for He alone can save. Amen?

Father, we thank You for giving us Your Son. We know salvation comes solely through Him. Help us to never trust in anyone or anything else. Baptize us in your Spirit and give us all the gifts You desire for us to have for the work of ministry we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
