Acts 17:19-21

Acts 17:19–21 (ESV): "19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean." 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new."

You've heard it said, "if it's new it's not true." That isn't always the case. The Gospel was new in Paul's day thus many of the Jews rejected it. We must guard against the idea that if it's new to us it's not true. Let the Scriptures say what they say even if it's new to us.

After the riot in Thessalonica, Paul and Silas went to Berea and many of the Jews heard the Gospel, sought the Scriptures, and believed in the Lord Jesus. The Jews from Thessalonica came and pushed them out to Athens. Paul was then invited to share his new teaching at Mars Hill. He used the statue of the unknown god in their city to preach the Gospel to them. Some mocked him because he taught of the resurrection of Jesus, while others received it.

When you hear something new or contrary to what you believe what is your response? Do you reject the message or search the Scriptures? Don't be arrogant. Consider what is being said in light of the Scriptures. Don't just automatically reject it because it's new to you. Search the Word and let it determine your response. If it's new, it might be true! You will never know if you don't measure it against the Word. Amen?

Father, we thank you for continually giving us things to consider relating to You. May we measure everything we hear against Your Word and receive what is true and reject the rest we pray in Jesus' name, amen!
