Acts 1:4–5 (ESV): "4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
The Holy Spirit is the key to walking in the ways of Jesus. All Christians are sealed with the Holy Spirit but need subsequent fillings or empowerment to do the work that God has called us to do. This is called "the Baptism of the Holy Spirit." God is faithful to supply all we need to do His will.
Luke records a command from Jesus to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father. This wasn't the promise of the giving of the Spirit for Jesus had already "breathed on them and said, receive the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22)." This promise was for power to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Jesus' command was firm, "do not depart Jerusalem without this empowerment."
Do you wait on God for empowerment so you can be His witness? When is the last time you attended an "afterglow" or "believers meeting" seeking the outpouring of the Holy Spirit? Believers should be actively waiting on the Lord for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. We need this power to be His witnesses. If you are wondering why you feel powerless today to do His work, perhaps it's because you have departed "Jerusalem" without empowerment. Wait on God, ask Him to baptize you with His Spirit and then go in the Spirit of Jesus and do the same works He did, amen?
Father, we thank You that You don't expect us to be Your witnesses without the power to do so. Cleanse us of our sin and baptize us today in Your Spirit so we can be used to be Your witnesses in our Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
