1 Thessalonians 5:9-11

1 Thessalonians 5:9–11 (ESV): "9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing."

Where will the church be when the wrath of God is poured out upon a Christ rejecting world? With Jesus, for God has not destined us for wrath but to obtain salvation through Him...can I get an amen?

The believers in Thessalonica were concerned about the time of Jacobs Trouble (Jer 30:7), better known to us as the Tribulation period. They understood that the wrath of God (holy indignation over sin) would result in severe judgment. They obviously were worried about experiencing that and yet Paul assures them that although the day will come like a thief in the night, they will not experience it because God has not destined believers for wrath but salvation through Jesus Christ! They need not worry for when that day comes the church will be no where to be found.

We are to encourage each other with these words. Jesus Christ took the wrath that belonged to you and I upon the cross. He paid the price for our sin so we could be reconcile to the Father. The wrath that this world will experience will exclude the church, not because we want out of if but because Jesus has already received it on our behalf. Therefore live holy lives Christian. Don't use His grace as a means of gratifying the flesh. Live for Jesus and rescue as many people from the wrath to come as you can!

Father we thank You for Your incredible love and mercy. Thank You for sending Your Son to pay the price for us. He took the wrath that was owed to us. May that motivate us to live to please You. Forgive us today and let us be encouraged by Your Word so much so that we share it with others in Jesus name we pray, amen.
