1 Samuel 17:38-40

1 Samuel 17:38–40 (ESV): "38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, 39 and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them." So David put them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd's pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine."

The battle before us can't be fought in earthly armor or with worldly weaponry. We need to be clothed in the armor of God with the sword of the Spirit. It's the only way to ensure victory in the spiritual realm.

When the Philistines came out for war against Israel they sent their champion Goliath of Gath to call out a man from Israel to settle the war. For forty days he challenged Saul to send someone out to fight him. If he won then the Philistines would be their servants. Every man in Saul's army was afraid except David, and he wasn't even in the army. He was just a young man but had great faith. He declared, "who is this man that he would defy the armies of the living God?" David knew Goliath was no match for Jehovah God.

Thus David volunteered to fight Goliath, so Saul gave him his armor and weapon but it was all too heavy for David. He couldn't move in it so he took it all off, found five smooth stones and put them in his bag, one for Goliath and four more for his brothers, and he stepped on the battlefield with no earthly armor and a slingshot for a weapon. He was completely dependent on God for the victory.

When we try to fight spiritual battles with the things of this world we are destined for failure. We must rely on God's armor and stay completely surrender to His power if we want to slay the Goliaths in our lives. David did and victory was given to Him. Don't look to any other means of victory, trust in the Lord and what only He can supply and you will find victory in every spiritual battle you face. Faith wins every time!

Father, we thank You for giving us all that we need for victory in every battle we face. It's You who fights for us. Build us up in faith today that we wouldn't fret the enemy. Let us say as David said, who is it that can defy the armies of the Living God? No one can stand against You Lord. May we be clothed in the armor of God and filled with faith and watch You bring victory to our lives for Your honor and glory we pray in Jesus name, amen!
