1 Corinthians 14:26

1 Corinthians 14:26 (ESV): "26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up."

The body is full of gifted people that should desire to use their gifting. However, there must be an order to the exercising of these gifts with the main emphasis being to build one another up. We must be led by the Spirit if we desire to see this done correctly.

One of the biggest issues with public gatherings is the temptation for some to take the spotlight from God and shine it on themselves. In Corinth, the gift of tongues was considered an elite spiritual gift thus those who possessed it wanted to display it for all to see. They were forsaking the building up of the body for the elevation of self. It wasn't wrong to exercise this gift but it must be done in an orderly manner and not be the main emphasis of the gathering. Prophecy, the forth-telling of God's Word should be primary.

When gathering with God's people what is your focus? Are you present to build up the body or edify yourself? Whatever gifting we have we ought to use it to build up the body. We should be led in the Spirit regarding the exercising though lest we become a distraction. If a prophecy is being spoken by way of the teaching of the Word, a word in a tongue at that moment wouldn't be appropriate. The Spirit would never interrupt Himself. May all things be done for the building up of all people. Amen?

Father, we surrender our hearts and desires to You. We want all things to be done decently and in order. Help us to walk by the Spirit as we gather together we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
