1 Corinthians 14:1 (ESV): "Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy."

There is but one pursuit for the Christian in this life, it is to display the love of God to a lovesick world. In so doing, God gets all the glory. Above all pursue love.

The Corinthian church, much like many in our culture, pursued all the wrong things. They were looking for the ultimate experience rather than the ultimate way to glorify God. They were pursuing the gifts of the Spirit for personal elevation and experience rather than for love sake. It was like love wasn't in the equation at all. They would have rather spoke a thousands word in a tongue fueled by pride or prophesied a thousand prophecies with arrogance rather than say one word in love. It ends up it was not edifying to the body nor was it building up the saint. Love must be the chief pursuit of our lives!

We can get like that at times too! We are so busy being theologically right or spiritually astute that we can abandon the core of the Christian life, love! Paul told us to walk in love (Ephesians 5:2). The departure from this pursuit is to the demise of the Believer and the defamation of our God. God is love above all things thus if we want to walk like Him we must pursue love. Desire spiritual gifts but do not abandon your pursuit of love. Check yourself before you wreck yourself Christian. Are you walking in love? If not, choose to do so even right now.

Father we come in the mighty name of Jesus asking for Your Holy Spirit to remove all other pursuits in our lives that we might pursue love. We surrender our will to You even now and receive the anointing and power to walk in love in all that we do. We do desire spiritual gifts but not at the sake of diminishing love. Give us all You have for us and may we be diligent stewards for Your glory we pray in Jesus name, amen.
