1 Corinthians 1:11-13
1 Corinthians 1:11–13 (ESV): 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, "I follow Paul," or "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Cephas," or "I follow Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?"A great temptation for every Christian is to think that following a man is following Christ. Beware of the trap! Do not follow anyone other than Jesus.
Corinth was one of the greatest cities in ancient times. It was prosperous which made it a center for licentious living. In fact it was a derogatory term to be called a Corinthian because they were so loose. The people in Corinth were as worldly as you can get and thus when the church was formed a lot of the worlds values infiltrated such as the pride of association. Many believers were dividing over who they considered their pastor. Paul was reminding them that Christ is not divided.
The modern church is very much like the church in Corinth. Many are following a man rather than Jesus. It's not wrong to belong to a denomination or not too, the error comes when you divide over the man. If we are all following Jesus then we can never be divided. Let us stand firm as one body with one head Jesus Christ. Count everything else as rubbish! Amen?
Father we thank You for the unity Christ died to give. May we never allow pride to divide us. Keep us from forming cliques based on non-essential things. We want to follow Jesus so help us to never lose sight of that goal we pray in Jesus name, amen!
