1 Chronicles 19:3-5

1 Chronicles 19:3–5 (ESV): "3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun, "Do you think because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?" 4 So Hanun took David's servants and shaved them and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away; 5 and they departed."

People's response to random acts of kindness isn't always favorable. Many times when the world experiences someone doing something nice for them they think there's an ulterior motive behind the action. Let that never stop you from continuing the spread the love of Jesus through random acts of kindness.

After hearing of the passing of Nahash, the King of the Ammonites, David sent messengers to console Hanun, the son, and successor of the King. The princes advised King Hanun that David's kindness was a front and that the messengers he sent were actually spies sent to scope out the land. So they shaved and exposed them indecently and sent them home. When David heard this he assembled the army and prepared for war.

Not everyone will take your acts of kindness at face value. The world is conditioned to think that kindness is a front for some ulterior motive so we can expect to be treated harshly when we are nice to people. Let that not be an excuse to refrain from going out of your way to being kind to those around you. That is exactly what the enemy wants. Let us assemble for war against principalities and powers and rulers of darkness by continuing to allow the love of Christ to be poured out through us so that the world may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Be kind and show love while expecting nothing in return. Then and only then are you truly being like Jesus.

Father, we thank You for being so kind to us! It's Your kindness that leads us to repentance. Thank You for never ceasing to be kind after the countless times we ridiculed and rejected You. May we have Your heart towards those we are called to serve and minister to. Protect our hearts from becoming hard and help us never to grow weary in doing good we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
