1 Chronicles 17:16–17 (ESV): "16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, "Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17 And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant's house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O Lord God!"
One of the most elusive attributes of the human heart is gratitude. It is not subject to a circumstance for we are often as ungrateful in the good times as we are in the bad. Do some searching within today and see if you can't find a little gratitude and once you do hold on to it! It will change your life.
After God told David that He would bless his lineage and establish his throne forever he got alone and thanked God for His benevolence and grace. David knew this was far bigger than just his decedents but that God was speaking of the coming Messiah as well! This humbled David so greatly that he couldn't help but praise and thank God.
God has kept His promise and the Messiah has come. If you are a believer you should maintain that same gratitude David had by proclaiming, "who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far." He saved your soul from eternal damnation. If God were not to do another thing in your life He's done enough! Take some time today and just thank God for all that He has done and is doing. Thank Him for giving you hope beyond the grave! Let the gratitude within spill out in the form of spontaneous praise and worship. He is good and there is none like Him so tell Him that!
Father, how amazing You are. You set the world into motion with Your words. You took Your thoughts and spoke, "let there be", and it was. Yet in the midst of the wonder of creation coming to pass, You thought of me. What a humbling thought that You were thinking specifically of me from before the foundation of the world. Forgive me for not thinking of You as I ought. Let my thoughts be consumed by the greatness of who You are. Let my mind and heart be overwhelmed by all the wonderful things You have done. Help me find the well of gratitude within Lord that I might drink of it all the days of my life. You deserve nothing less than wholehearted gratefulness. May gratitude never again finding a hiding place within me I pray in Jesus name, amen.
