Judges 13:21–22 (ESV): 21 The angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord. 22 And Manoah said to his wife, "We shall surely die, for we have seen God."
It's a wonderful and frightening thing to be in the presence of God. His holiness exposes our sinfulness and yet He will still use us. May we never allow our imperfection as an excuse for not serving Him.
After Jephthah died and Israel returned to its wicked ways God gave them into the hands of the Philistines. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to the wife of Manoah who was barren declaring she was to have a child and thus she must have no wine or strong drink, eat nothing unclean and never allow a razor to come upon his head for he was to be a Nazarite to God. This man would become a type of Christ, a savior to Israel from the hands of the Philistines. His name will be Samson which means "shining as the sun."
Manoah knew that he and his wife had been visited by God Himself. After asking His name, the angel of the Lord replied:" it is Wonderful (Isa 9:6)." This was none other than Jesus who Manoah recognized as God! Manoah would then offer a burnt offering to the Lord and Jesus would go up to heaven in the flame never to visit them again. The phrase that sticks out is "we shall surely die, for we have seen God." Manoah understood his imperfection in the presence of Jesus and yet God would use them to bring a son into the world who would be a savior to God's people. They were imperfect and yet still usable.
God can still use us in our imperfections. Don't let your past control your future. Allow the presence of God to reveal any sin in our lives so that we can repent and then walk in obedience to God. Manoah and his wife will do exactly what Jesus instructed them to do and they will be used by God. Get in His presence and listen for His voice then just do what He says! Amen?
Father, we thank You for using imperfect people to accomplish Your plan of redemption. Thank You for allowing us to experience the holiness of Your presence which convicts us of our sin. May we turn away from this world and follow You alone. Protect us from ever thinking we are disqualified from being used because we are not perfect. Cleanse us and embolden us to walk in obedience to Your instruction we pray in Jesus name, amen!
