1 Samuel 24:4-7
1 Samuel 24:4–7 (ESV): "Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 5 And afterward, David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 6 He said to his men, "The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's anointed." 7 So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way."
Honoring God goes beyond just lifting up His name. It also includes honoring the positions He has created and ordained for His purposes, i.e., honor your father and mother. It's not so much about the honorability of the person as it is the One whom they represent.
After running from Saul, David found himself in an advantageous position in the caves of Engedi. Saul entered a certain cave to relieve himself and David and his men were in the innermost part of the cave. It was David's chance to relieve himself of all the hardship and oppression he had been experiencing from Saul. So David snuck behind him and cut off a piece of his robe and immediately became convicted because Saul was God's anointed. David instructed his men to bring no harm to Saul choosing to honor God and the position He ordained and not necessarily the person occupying it.
Perhaps you have an authority figure in your midst who is making your life difficult. As Christians, we understand God has a plan through adversity. It's so our faith can be tested and perseverance can do its perfecting work (James 1:2-4). We are not called to rise up against those who are over us. We don't have to agree with their actions or appreciate their character but we do need to honor their position as the authority God has allowed in our lives. It's not a matter of Red or Blue, a donkey or an elephant, it's a matter of honor to the One who created authority (Romans 13:1). Be like David, honor the position God has put said person in and bring glory to His name by doing so.
Father, we thank You for who You are. You are the King of all creation and the lover of our souls. Forgive us for missing opportunities to honor You through difficulties. Change our hearts to be obedient even when it hurts. Our hearts belong to You. Have Your way in us we pray in Jesus name, amen!
