1 Samuel 16:6-7

1 Samuel 16:6–7 (ESV): 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before him." 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."

God chooses us for His purpose and goodwill not based on our outward abilities or appearance but on our inward heart and willingness to follow Him. You are chosen by Him so that He can get the most glory!

After Saul was dethroned God sent Samuel to Jesse the Bethlehemite to anoint the new king of Israel. Jesse brought out seven of his sons and Samuel passed by each of them waiting on God to reveal who He had chosen to no avail. Samuel then asked Jesse if these were all his sons and he revealed that he had one more son who was tending the sheep in the wilderness. Samuel asked that he be brought before him and when he was God proclaimed, "He's my man." Samuel anointed David and the Spirit of God came upon him that day forward.

Don't you love that God chose the least of the sons of Jesse? David wasn't even a contender in Jesse's eyes. He was left in the field to tend the animals. These are the kind of people God uses, the least likely. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:26–29 (ESV): "26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God."

Like David, you and I are called not because of what we have to offer God but because He can get the most glory through us! Rejoice and be glad that God has chosen you for His Kingdom and service. Walk strong in this calling and bring glory to our great God and King!

Father what a tremendous honor it is to be chosen by You even though it is primarily because of what we are not. Keep us humble and usable people. May we be a mirror reflecting all glory to You alone. You do the work in and through us and You deserve all the credit. Thank You for saving us and for redeeming our souls in Jesus name we pray, amen.
