1 Samuel 16:17-19

1 Samuel 16:17–19 (ESV): 17 So Saul said to his servants, "Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me." 18 One of the young men answered, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him." 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep."

The true character of a person is on display when no one else is looking. Everything else is a presentation of who we want people to believe we are. What would those who watch you secretly say about you?

When Saul was being tormented, for God withdrew His Spirit from him and allowed an evil spirit to plague him, his servant suggested sending for someone who could skillfully play the lyre (a small harp-like instrument). The servant then suggested David, who beyond his musical abilities, was a man of character known for his confidence, courage, and charisma. David had a reputation for being a man of valor and of war, a well-spoken man and man of good presence. The most important thing David had going for him was that the Lord was with him. Saul sent for David and immediately loved him finding comfort from the tormenting spirit through his music. He made him his armor-bearer.

What are you known for? What kind of characteristics would people define you by? Are you recommendable? Most importantly, do others see the Lord's hand working in and through your life?David wasn't one way put in the field by himself and another way when he knew people were watching. We must not live dual lives for who we are on Sunday should be who we are on Monday. Live in the secret like someone is watching! Be the same before people as you are when you're alone. Amen?

Father, we give You praise and honor today for who You are. You are full of love and goodness. You never change. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. We want to be like You. Forgive us if we are living dual lives and create a heart change in us today that causes us to be the same at home as we are before man. Fill us with Your love and kindness and give us the power to overcome the weakness of our flesh. We can't do it on our own so we look to You for power and ability in Jesus' name we pray, Amen and amen!
